Destroyers, Frigates and Corvettes: What's the Difference?

The US has 83 destroyers, China 53 and Japan 41. What separates a destroyer from a frigate or corvette, and which countries have the most of each.

Destroyers, frigates and corvettes are the workhorses of any navy: the surface warships that escort carriers, hunt submarines, defend against missiles and patrol sea lanes. The names come from very different historical roles, and today the lines between them are blurry. Still, they describe a rough hierarchy of size and capability.

The three types

Destroyers are the largest common surface combatants, typically between 7,000 and 13,000 tonnes in modern navies. They carry large numbers of missiles in vertical launch cells and are usually built around powerful radars for air and missile defence. Americaโ€™s Arleigh Burke class and Chinaโ€™s Type 055 are prominent examples.

Frigates are smaller, typically 3,000 to 7,000 tonnes, and are traditionally focused on escort duties and anti-submarine warfare. Many modern frigates are as capable as older destroyers.

Corvettes are the smallest ocean-going combat ships, usually under about 3,000 tonnes, built for coastal defence, patrol and anti-submarine work closer to home. Some carry surprisingly heavy missile armament for their size.

Navies do not always agree on these labels. Japan calls many of its large warships destroyers, and some recent European frigates are as large as destroyers elsewhere. Global Firepower, whose counts we use, follows each navyโ€™s own classification.

Destroyers

The United States has 83 destroyers, the backbone of its fleet. China has 53 and has been adding large, modern destroyers rapidly. Japanโ€™s 41 includes smaller ships that other navies might call frigates, but its fleet is still one of the most powerful in Asia, with several destroyers equipped for ballistic missile defence.

Frigates

China leads on frigates too, with 46. Taiwanโ€™s 21 frigates make it second in our dataset, a reflection of a navy built around escort and coastal defence. The US Navy is listed with no frigates at all after retiring its last ones in 2015; its new Constellation-class frigate programme has been beset by delays and cutbacks.

Corvettes

Russia has the most corvettes, at 79. Many of its smaller warships are designed to fire long-range cruise missiles despite their size, which gives the Russian navy considerable striking power from ships that can operate in enclosed seas like the Baltic, Black Sea and Caspian. The US figure of 27 counts its littoral combat ships.

Putting them together

Add destroyers, frigates and corvettes together and China leads with 149 surface combatants, ahead of the United States (110) and Russia (104). But because American ships are on average much larger and carry far more missiles, the US still holds a substantial lead in total firepower. See the worldโ€™s largest navies for the full picture.
